According to ISO New England, oil-fired generation in the region exceeded 700 MW on May 20 amid record May temperatures, with capacity sufficient to power approximately 500,000 households. Hours earlier, the grid operator declared the power system in "abnormal conditions" and ordered all generators to immediately halt routine maintenance that could reduce generating capacity.
