Nvidia released detailed specifications and benchmarks for its Vera data center CPU on Tuesday, entering competition with Advanced Micro Devices and Intel in the AI server processor market. The chip giant delivered Vera processors to clients including OpenAI, Anthropic, and SpaceX in June, according to Nvidia representatives. The CPU launch addresses growing demand for processors optimized for agentic AI workloads, which require faster single-core performance to manage AI agents running independently with minimal human input. Nvidia aims to sell complete rack systems integrating its GPUs and CPUs rather than standalone chips, part of its vertical integration strategy. The server CPU market could reach $200 billion, Nvidia stated, while current estimates place the mature market at approximately $37 billion in 2025.
Nvidia stated Vera is the first server CPU the company designed from the core, rather than using an off-the-shelf design from Arm. The chip delivers 50% better performance for AI agents compared to x86 processors from Intel and AMD, according to Nvidia. Previous CPUs focused on core count, while Vera's Olympus core prioritizes single-core speed, the company said.
Hannah Coutand, a Vera product marketer at Nvidia, stated in a presentation that the chip focused on per-core speed, high memory bandwidth, and latency "so that agents can return to their GPUs as quickly as possible and keep those GPUs, which are a very expensive and a highly valuable asset in the AI factory, as highly utilized as possible."
The processor consumes between 250 watts and 450 watts of power and supports up to 1.5 terabytes of memory per chip using low-power memory. Nvidia will sell Vera as a standalone chip, in a liquid-cooled rack configuration with 256 chips, in a two-chip server setup, and paired with Nvidia GPUs in a system called Vera Rubin.
Ian Buck, Nvidia's vice president of hyperscale, said at a presentation last week that agents have made CPUs "much more integral," particularly regarding "how fast a CPU can answer one question."
AMD reportedly holds approximately 33% of the server CPU market, while Intel controls 66.8%, but AMD is gaining share with deep hyperscaler relationships. Gartner analyst Kevin Knox said AMD is currently the company to beat in enterprise AI server CPUs, noting "AMD's done a great job building their ecosystem around their chips."
AMD and Intel rank among the two best-performing chip stocks in 2026, with AMD up 128% and Intel up 149%, compared to Nvidia's 8% increase. The rise of agentic AI returned attention to CPUs, which are needed to manage and feed data to AI agents.
Wolfe Research forecast in May that Nvidia would ship approximately 1.3 million Vera chips this year at an average selling price of about $5,000 per chip. Nvidia declined to comment on pricing.
Cambrian AI Research founder Karl Freund said Nvidia's CPU creates a new class that Intel and AMD don't currently address. "The CPU is something they've done to kind of unhook their customers from using Intel or AMD CPUs, and they covet that revenue," Freund stated. "What they've done is they decided to focus on a unique CPU that isn't available in the market from anyone right now."
Coutand said Vera adoption is in "early innings." Nvidia listed Oracle as a partner but did not name major cloud service providers. OpenAI plans to deploy Vera chips in large quantities starting this quarter, the company stated.
Before the AI boom, the CPU was the most important and expensive server component. First-generation AI servers available when ChatGPT launched in 2022 paired as many as eight GPUs to one CPU, signaling a shift toward Nvidia's GPUs.
