Samsung's Largest Union Threatens 18-Day Strike Starting May 21, Citing Lack of Pay Transparency

According to Nikkei, Samsung Electronics' largest union said on May 12 it hopes to avoid a planned strike beginning May 21 if the company improves compensation transparency. Union leader Choi Seung-ho stated that management's discretionary bonus decisions create a lack of transparency in the pay system. The union, representing about 70,000 members—more than half of Samsung's workforce—resumed negotiations with management on Monday after talks paused in late March. If negotiations fail, the union warns it will strike from May 21 to June 7, potentially causing 1 trillion Korean won (approximately $680 million) in daily losses.
