Security Researcher Uncovers Critical 4-Year-Old Flaw in Zcash Using Claude AI; ZEC Drops 38%

According to Decrypt reporting, security researcher Taylor Hornby discovered a critical flaw in Zcash's Orchard privacy pool in May using Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.8. The vulnerability, hidden in two lines of code, had remained undetected for over four years and could have enabled unlimited counterfeit ZEC creation within the shielded pool. An emergency fix was deployed on June 1. ZEC tumbled approximately 38% following the disclosure.

Cybersecurity experts warn that frontier AI models are increasingly capable of identifying sophisticated logic bugs and cryptographic flaws that previously required deep specialist expertise. Ben Goertzel, CEO of SingularityNET, noted that the discovery signals a shift in security research toward AI-augmented, continuous code review conducted by human specialists. Researchers suggest that similar capabilities may become widely available within months, raising concerns about the crypto industry's readiness to defend against AI-assisted vulnerability discovery.
