Semirara Mining Files Court Petition Over DOE's Demand for Proprietary Coal Mine Data

According to Rappler, Semirara Mining and Power Corporation (SMPC) filed a court petition on July 17 after the Department of Energy repeatedly demanded proprietary technical information and asset inventory related to its coal operations. The dispute follows DOE's rejection of SMPC's request to extend its coal operating contract beyond its July 2027 expiration and the department's decision to open 10 coal blocks on Semirara Island to public bidding. SMPC alleges DOE intends to share the data with rival bidders. The company argues that competitors should develop their own mine plans based on independent studies rather than relying on information built from decades of SMPC investment and operations.
