SK Hynix's Cheongju Plant Evacuates 3,600 Employees After Fire and Toxic Gas Leak Today

According to Yonhapnews, SK Hynix's semiconductor facility in Cheongju, South Korea experienced a fire and toxic gas leak today, June 1, at 10:32 a.m., prompting the emergency evacuation of approximately 3,600 employees. The fire broke out on the sixth floor of a gas chamber connecting the M15 and M15X buildings; the sprinkler system extinguished it quickly. Seven individuals were admitted to the in-house hospital after suspected exposure to harmful gases, with five reporting eye irritation. The company stated production was not affected and that the incident was preliminarily attributed to a gas pipeline malfunction; investigations are ongoing. Operations will resume once air quality tests and safety inspections are completed.
