SoftBank's Masayoshi Son Dismisses Musk's Space Data Center on June 23, Bets on Ground-Based AI Computing

According to Guru Club, SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son dismissed Elon Musk's space data center proposal on June 23 during the company's annual shareholder meeting, arguing that artificial intelligence competition will be decided by ground-based computing power. Son stated that while space data centers appear to offer significant electricity cost savings, power expenses represent only a small portion of total data center operational costs, with semiconductor hardware being the primary expenditure. He added that even if power savings were realized, high space transportation and maintenance costs, combined with communication latency issues, would make the approach economically unfavorable. Son emphasized that near-term AI competition matters more than long-term vision, and SoftBank will focus on building large-scale, powerful ground data centers, noting that "first movers win."
