South Korea Prepares Emergency Oil Reserve Swap Program as Middle East Tensions Rise, Red Sea Shipping Risks Escalate on July 27

According to South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, on July 27, the government held a crude oil supply review meeting in response to escalating Middle East tensions and elevated risks to shipping through the Red Sea. The government, along with refineries and shipping companies, will activate a real-time situation-sharing system and prepare to implement emergency measures including crude oil reserve swaps if needed. Additionally, authorities plan to coordinate alternative transport routes through the Suez Canal and Sumed pipeline, secure non-Middle Eastern crude supplies, and reassess the crisis warning system to mobilize all available policy measures when necessary.
