South Korea's KOSPI Trading Volume Falls 35.9%, Retail Investor Deposits Decline on July 20

According to the Korea Exchange, KOSPI trading volume on July 20 fell to 33.2 trillion won, down 35.9% from 51.8 trillion won on July 1. Investor deposits (cash reserves) also declined to 108.1 trillion won as of July 16, compared with nearly 140 trillion won in June, according to the Financial Investment Association. Retail investor net purchases weakened to 1.3 trillion won for the week of July 13–20, versus 3.7 trillion won in the previous week, while margin financing dropped 10.65% to 33.4 trillion won. Market analysts note that foreign investor inflows have become crucial to support equities amid weakened domestic demand, as retail investors previously absorbed foreign selling pressure.
