The White House posted on its official X account on April 17 in the United States, announcing: “The Strait of Hormuz is fully open—ready to do business!” Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi also quickly confirmed on X that during the ceasefire period, all commercial vessels can freely pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

“The Strait of Hormuz is fully open and ships can travel freely and conduct full commerce, but the maritime blockade against Iran will remain fully in effect until we have completed 100% of our deal with Iran. This process should happen very soon, because most of the terms have already been negotiated.”
— U.S. President Donald Trump
Iran’s foreign minister also confirms in parallel, in coordination with the Lebanon ceasefire
According to AP, Iran’s foreign minister Araghchi said on X that, in coordination with the Lebanon ceasefire agreement, during the remaining period of the ceasefire the Strait of Hormuz has “declared full openness” to all commercial vessels. This marks the first comprehensive restoration since the Feb. 28 U.S.-Iran attacks, after which Iran subsequently blocked the strait—nearly seven weeks later.
The maritime blockade remains in place; negotiations near the finish line
Although the strait has resumed commercial passage, Trump clearly stated that the United States’ maritime military blockade against Iran remains fully effective until the final deal between both sides is completed. He said that the talks are progressing positively, with most provisions already reached by consensus—wrapping it up is just a matter of time.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy shipping corridors, with about 21 million barrels of oil per day (roughly 20% of global supply) passing through it. During the blockade period, oil prices once climbed to more than $110 per barrel. After news of this reopening broke, market expectations for a return to normal energy supply conditions intensified.
