Trump Administration Considers Banning Chinese AI Models After Kimi K3 Release

According to Axios, the Trump administration on Monday (July 20) is considering restrictions or de facto bans on Chinese AI models, citing national security concerns as Chinese AI capabilities advance. The reconsideration follows the release of Kimi K3 by Moon Darkness (月之暗面) on July 16.

Kimi K3 features 2.8 trillion parameters and supports up to 1 million tokens in context with a sparse mixture-of-experts architecture. Moon Darkness claims the model ranks second only to Claude and GPT-5.6 in overall performance, with Bloomberg and other U.S. media noting the China-U.S. AI gap has narrowed to months.
