Gate News message, April 17 — Ukrainian forces from the 23rd National Guard Brigade intercepted multiple Russian Geran self-propelled drones on April 16 using FPV (first-person view) ‘STING’ interceptor drones operated by Wild Hornet, a Ukrainian drone manufacturer. Footage released by Wild Hornet captured the interception moments in detail.
The video footage revealed severe structural damage across the intercepted Geran drones, a Russian variant of Iran’s Shahed-136. Multiple drones showed torn internal access panels, bent and deformed wing tips, and at least one displayed complete separation of the nose fairing. Ukrainian military reported that damage was often observed before interception, indicating pre-existing structural failures.
The quality degradation stems from Russia’s production approach at the Yelabuга drone factory in Tatarstan: reliance on unskilled migrant laborers (primarily young women and teenagers from African nations) combined with low-grade Chinese components has prioritized mass production over quality control, resulting in widespread defects in the Geran-2 drone line.
