According to Israeli sources, UN Deputy Secretary-General Gille Michaud was questioned and detained for 45 minutes by Israeli security officials (Shin Bet) upon arriving at Ben Gurion Airport on May 12. Michaud was asked about his previous visit to Gaza. Israeli officials stated the incident occurred due to mistaken identity by security personnel. Following the detention, Michaud said such treatment of senior UN officials was unprecedented and announced he would cancel his scheduled official meetings in Israel.
