Vitalik Buterin has outlined a "Lean Ethereum" roadmap aimed at reshaping the network's core protocol around native STARKs, quantum-resistant cryptography and formally verifiable infrastructure. The roadmap centers on three technical pillars: deeper integration of STARKs (scalable transparent arguments of knowledge) for more efficient verification and rollups; migration of Ethereum's cryptography from ECDSA and BLS signatures to quantum-resistant alternatives, given potential threats from future quantum computers; and increased reliance on formal verification to reduce infrastructure bugs. The changes are long-term rather than immediate, requiring years of research and coordination across validators, wallets and applications, but aim to strengthen Ethereum's position as durable settlement infrastructure for on-chain finance.
