Zoox Recalls Software in 105 Robotaxis After Smoke Detection Failure on June 20

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Zoox notified the agency on July 8 of a software recall affecting 105 of its robotaxis over smoke detection failures. The recall followed an incident on June 20 in Las Vegas, where an unoccupied Zoox vehicle drove into heavy smoke obscuring an active emergency fire scene that was not cordoned off with cones. The vehicle braked hard while attempting to steer away before stopping. A Zoox teleguidance employee then instructed the vehicle to reverse, and first responders placed traffic cones to block the scene. Zoox determined this was an isolated event with no injuries identified.
