Abstract generation in progress

At “The Android Show: XR Edition” held by Google early this morning on 12/9, several new developments in the Android XR ecosystem were announced, including major updates for the Galaxy XR headset and the first public unveiling of next-generation XR and AI glasses prototypes developed by partners.

Galaxy XR Major Updates: PC Connect, Travel Mode, and Likeness Launch

Google announced that new features for the Galaxy XR headset will be gradually rolled out starting from 12/9, allowing users to more naturally integrate XR into their daily work and life.

PC Connect: Bringing Windows and Google Play Apps into the XR Space

The official announcement introduced PC Connect, which allows Windows computers to connect to the Galaxy XR and bring the desktop or any window into the XR interface, enabling side-by-side use with native Google Play apps. This feature allows users to work or even play PC games on a giant virtual screen, offering much more workspace than a laptop display. PC Connect is being released in beta starting today.

PC Connect can be used on the device to access Google Maps and play games in an immersive way. Travel Mode: Stable XR Use on Airplanes

To enable XR device use in more scenarios, Google launched Travel Mode (Travel mode), which maintains a stable view in tight environments such as airplanes, creating a personal cinema or immersive workspace. Even when the body is moving, the display remains steady.

Likeness: Create a Personal Digital Avatar with Real-Time Facial Expression Sync

Galaxy XR introduces the Likeness feature, allowing users to use their facial contours to create a personal digital avatar that can present real-time expressions during video calls.

Google says this feature lets users “show real expressions” while wearing the device, enhancing natural communication. Likeness enters beta 1 today, and the official operation guide page is also available.

Building an XR Device Ecosystem: AI Glasses and New XR Glasses Unveiled for the First Time

Google noted that XR and AI hardware will not be limited to a single form factor. Therefore, the Android XR platform will support a wider variety of wearable devices, allowing users to choose the most suitable weight, appearance, and level of immersion for their needs.

Two Types of AI Glasses: Screenless Voice Assistant and Information Glasses with Built-in Display

Google announced a collaboration with Samsung, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker to develop two types of AI glasses:

Screenless AI Glasses: Built-in speaker, microphone, and camera, capable of interacting with Gemini, taking photos, and receiving assistance, focusing on lightweight, all-day wearable AI devices.

AI Glasses with Built-in Display: Lenses include a display for private information viewing, showing real-time content such as navigation and translated subtitles.

Google stated that the first batch of AI glasses will be launched next year.

Project Aura: XREAL’s First Android XR “Wired XR Glasses” Revealed

Android XR will also support wired XR glasses, combining the immersive experience of headsets with the lightweight form of regular glasses.

At the event, Google unveiled XREAL’s Project Aura for the first time. It features a 70-degree field of view and optical see-through technology, overlaying digital content directly onto the real world. Multiple windows can be placed simultaneously, such as following floating video tutorials while cooking or displaying steps while repairing appliances.

Google said more details will be announced next year, and Project Aura will officially debut then as well.

Developer Tools Update: Android XR SDK Developer Preview 3 Released

Google emphasized that hardware is just the “canvas” and that the real experience needs to be built by developers. Therefore, Android XR SDK Developer Preview 3 was released simultaneously, allowing developers to officially create apps for AI glasses.

This update opens up AI glasses development tools and APIs for the first time, enabling developers to create practical augmented experiences like Uber or GetYourGuide. At the same time, Google also provides more APIs for XR headsets and wired XR glasses, making it easier to create richer and more immersive interactive content.

Developers can find tutorials on the Android Developer Blog, while general users can join Google’s notification list to stay updated on new product launches.
