Wrongly killing the crypto industry? Industry insiders criticize X executives for limiting crypto tweets: "Crypto people love to post low-quality content."

CryptoQuant points out a 1,200% surge in bot posts on the X platform, algorithm mistakenly harms crypto content, and Musk promises to disclose the algorithm to put out the fire.

Crypto content turns into “junk information”? Data reveals a 1,200% spike in bot activity

In the cryptocurrency community, social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has always been the core communication hub for market insights, project updates, and on-chain analysis. However, this once pure community space is now facing an unprecedented governance crisis.

On-chain data analysis firm CryptoQuant founder Ki Young Ju recently publicly criticized X, accusing the platform of being overwhelmed in combating automated spam, and instead turning to suppress legitimate crypto-related content.

According to data from CryptoQuant’s Radar tool, on January 9, 2026, the number of automated posts related to the keyword “Crypto” experienced a shocking increase, generating over 7.7 million posts in a single day, a surge of over 1,200% compared to previous levels.

This overwhelming wave of AI-generated spam forced X’s algorithms to treat the entire “cryptocurrency” hashtag as a potential source of spam, triggering widespread algorithm de-ranking, which also mistakenly affected genuine user accounts.

Algorithm misjudgment and “paid scams”: community questions X platform governance failure

Ki Young Ju emphasized that with advances in AI technology, the appearance of bot accounts is inevitable. The core issue is that the X platform lacks effective ability to distinguish between automated accounts and human users.

He specifically criticized Elon Musk’s paid verification system, arguing that it has lost its original function as a filtering tool and has instead become a pass for bots to “pay for harassment.” Under the current mechanism, bot accounts with blue checkmarks can pay for higher exposure, while genuine community users find their content’s reach significantly diminished.

Many crypto accounts report that even when posting educational long-form articles or technical charts, their view counts are often limited to 300-800 views, showing clear signs of “throttling.” Ju finds this absurd, believing that X would rather use blunt measures like banning crypto content than invest effort into improving bot detection technology.

X product leader counters: “Self-destructing” CT, low-quality posts drain traffic

In response to growing community dissatisfaction, X’s product head Nikita Bier offered a different explanation. Bier believes that the declining visibility of “Crypto Twitter” (CT) is not entirely due to algorithm issues, but more due to users’ “self-destructive” behavior patterns.

He pointed out that many crypto accounts, in order to maintain popularity, frequently post大量低價值資訊,例如重複發送數百次“GM”(早安)或參與毫無意義的互動,這些行為在 Bier 看來等同於“自殺”。

Since the average user scrolls through only about 20 to 30 posts daily, when accounts consume their precious display quota to post “WAGMI” or “LFG” spam, their followers’ feeds are already filled with these, making it impossible for genuine updates to be seen.

However, this explanation did not quell the anger. Many veteran users counter that X’s team is ignoring the fact that the crypto community is a vital cornerstone of the platform’s vitality. Blindly implementing the December 2025 anti-spam update is making the platform increasingly unfriendly to the crypto industry.

Musk promises algorithm transparency, can Grok intervention save the community ecosystem?

According to Bloomberg, amidst this controversy, X owner Elon Musk announced a major plan on January 10, 2026: X will publicly release its algorithm code within 7 days, showing how the platform filters posts and ads.

Musk promised that every 4 weeks, the algorithm’s transparency will be updated with detailed developer explanations to address external concerns about content bias and throttling.

Additionally, X plans to deeply integrate the AI chatbot Grok developed by xAI, which will evaluate all platform posts daily. The goal is to use more precise AI identification to filter low-quality content and recommend high-quality information genuinely interesting to users.

Although Musk has a history of failing to deliver transparency promises on time, facing strict scrutiny from regulators in Indonesia, the UK, and other countries regarding Grok’s generated content, this self-correction by X appears urgent. For the crypto community, the upcoming algorithm disclosure will be critical, affecting not only information dissemination freedom but also whether X can continue to sit firmly as the global hub for crypto communication.
