The US has authorized the export of Nvidia H200 AI chips to China - ForkLog: cryptocurrencies, AI, singularity, future
However, China has banned the import of the technology
The administration of US President Donald Trump officially authorized the sale of Nvidia’s second-most powerful AI chips — H200 — to China. Reuters reports.
According to established rules, the chips will be tested by an independent testing laboratory for technical capabilities in artificial intelligence before sale.
In China, it is permitted to supply no more than 50% of the total semiconductors sold to American clients.
Nvidia must confirm that there is a sufficient stock of H200 in the US, and Chinese clients must demonstrate “security measures” and not use the chips for military purposes.
The company stated that Trump’s decision “provides a thoughtful balance that benefits America” and helps the firm compete in the global market.
Seaport Research stock analyst noted that export restrictions are a compromise.
And in China, they are not exactly happy
The Chinese government has informed some tech companies that H200 purchases will only be approved in special cases, such as for university research applications. The Information reports.
According to the report, authorities issued a “deliberately vague” directive, instructing some firms to buy semiconductors only when “necessary.”
Earlier, the government asked some companies to suspend orders for H200, as it seeks to prioritize domestic developments in the AI race.
Recall that in December 2025, Trump stated that Nvidia would receive permission to sell H200 AI chips to “approved clients” in China and other countries, provided the US receives 25% of the profits.
