According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Adam Iza, a 25-year-old California resident, pleaded guilty this week to conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery, known as Hobbs Act robbery, in connection with an attempted kidnapping and carjacking in Danbury, Connecticut. Court documents revealed the scheme targeted the parents of an individual involved in a theft of hundreds of millions of dollars in bitcoin, with the goal of obtaining access to stolen cryptocurrency. The DOJ stated Iza helped fund and coordinate the plan, maintaining contact with kidnappers through encrypted messaging while directing logistics. Iza pleaded guilty to conspiracy against rights, wire fraud, and tax evasion in a separate California case involving allegations he operated a crypto trading business called Zort and used off-duty law enforcement to intimidate rivals. The Hobbs Act offense carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence.
