ChatGPT Reaches 1 Billion Monthly App Users in May, Fastest to Hit Mark

According to Sensor Tower, OpenAI's ChatGPT reached an estimated 1 billion monthly active app users worldwide in May, becoming the fastest app to reach that milestone roughly three years after launch. The app grew faster than Google Maps, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, per the market intelligence firm.

Anthropics's Claude app had 56 million monthly active users in the second quarter to date, with year-on-year growth of approximately 640% outpacing ChatGPT's 62%. Anthropic filed confidentially for an initial public offering in the US on June 2, while OpenAI was preparing to file in the coming weeks.
