EU and Japan Deepen Cooperation in AI, Data Governance, Quantum Technology on May 5

According to the European Commission, the EU and Japan held their fourth Digital Partnership Council meeting in Brussels on May 5, announcing deepened cooperation across data governance, artificial intelligence, and quantum technology. The two sides plan to establish a joint “Data Strategy Working Group” to enhance data-sharing levels and promote collaborative research and innovation. Japan’s participation in the EU’s flagship “Horizon Europe” scientific program was welcomed by the Commission, which expects to accelerate joint research in digital fields including AI. Additionally, both parties will launch joint research initiatives in quantum technology to advance hybrid computing environments and explore quantum applications in materials science, carbon dioxide reduction, and satellite image analysis.
