According to the FBI's July 20 public service announcement, scammers are impersonating personnel from the FBI and Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) to target people who have already lost money to fraud. The criminals use AI-generated videos and fake websites to appear legitimate, falsely claiming they recovered stolen funds or can assist victims in retrieving losses.
The FBI stated that IC3 never charges recovery fees and does not maintain social media accounts or contact victims through Facebook, Telegram, or similar platforms. The agency advised consumers not to send cryptocurrency, gift cards, wire transfers, or other assets to anyone claiming recovery services, and to report suspected scams through the official IC3 website.
