According to CNBC, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella testified in federal court in Oakland, California on Monday, May 12 in Musk’s ongoing lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman. Microsoft is also named as a defendant in the case.
Musk alleges that Microsoft “aided and abetted” OpenAI in breaching its charitable trust obligations. Court documents show Microsoft has invested over $13 billion in OpenAI since 2019, including a $10 billion investment in 2023. Musk argues this investment marked a key turning point when OpenAI deviated from its nonprofit mission. OpenAI’s leadership has been accused of benefiting from the charitable structure while pursuing commercial paths.
