On July 24, Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, Google, and OpenAI joined dozens of technology companies, startups, and research institutions in signing an open letter urging U.S. policymakers not to restrict open-weight AI models. The signatories, including 32 organizations such as Cisco, IBM, and the Linux Foundation, argue that America's AI leadership depends on building a strong open ecosystem rather than controlling individual models. They contend that model distillation is essential to AI innovation and should be addressed through targeted legal frameworks rather than broad restrictions. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang emphasized on X that open models strengthen security and accelerate innovation while preserving technological sovereignty for nations. The move responds to recent Washington concerns about open-weight AI safety risks and U.S. officials' criticism of Chinese company Moonshot AI's model Kimi K3. Anthropic remains the only major AI vendor among the signatories without public support for open models.
