South Korean Retail CFD Positions Surge to 3.3 Trillion Won, Up 67% Year-over-Year; SK Hynix, Samsung Face Leverage Risk

According to data from the Korea Financial Investment Association, as of July 21, South Korean retail investors' CFD (contract for difference) positions surged to approximately 3.3 trillion won (about 2.2 billion USD), up nearly 67% compared to one year ago.

SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics became the most concentrated leverage bets among Korean retail traders. SK Hynix CFD positions skyrocketed nearly 2,500% to 235 billion won over the past year, while Samsung Electronics holdings expanded to around 217 billion won, roughly five times the prior level. CFD structures require only about 40% margin while granting full exposure to underlying assets, though investors do not own actual shares.
