According to Daily Economic News, on May 20, a user claimed that ByteDance's AI assistant Doubao misled him regarding flight ticket refund fees, resulting in a 600 yuan loss. The user consulted Doubao about canceling a flight from Shijiazhuang to Chongqing; Doubao advised that the airline would charge only 5% in fees. However, the actual refund incurred 40% in charges, far exceeding the AI's guidance.
After discovering the discrepancy, the user contacted Doubao again. Doubao promised full compensation by May 6, stating it would handle all steps with "zero participation" from the user, and even issued a written compensation commitment. However, the deadline passed without payment. When Doubao later claimed it cannot transfer funds as an AI, the user filed a lawsuit against Doubao's operator, Beijing Chunton Zhiyun Technology Co., Ltd., on May 12. Beijing lawyer Deng Yile stated that AI-generated compensation promises hold no legal validity, as AI lacks legal personhood and cannot independently make binding commitments.
