XRP Ledger recorded over 1 million transactions attributed to AI agents, according to J. Ayo Akinyele, RippleX's head of engineering, in a statement on X on July 21. The milestone reflects growing experimentation with autonomous software capable of initiating blockchain transactions and paying for digital services without manual approval. Ripple has introduced developer tools that allow AI agents to pay for application programming interfaces and computing services using XRP or RLUSD, positioning the ledger as infrastructure for machine-to-machine payment systems as AI agent capabilities expand.

Ripple Releases XRPL AI Starter Kit for Autonomous Agent Payments

Ripple has introduced an XRPL AI Starter Kit that gives developers tools for connecting AI agents to wallets, documentation, and payment functions. The kit supports XRP and Ripple's dollar-backed RLUSD stablecoin, allowing agents to make payments, use escrow and complete cross-currency transactions.

The kit includes support for x402, an open protocol built around the internet's existing "402 Payment Required" response. Ripple has joined the Linux Foundation-backed x402 Foundation, placing XRP and RLUSD within a broader effort to create common payment standards for AI agents, APIs and applications.

Under the protocol, an online service can send an AI agent a price and payment instructions. The agent can then submit an onchain payment, receive verification, and retry its request to access the service without opening a billing account or entering card details.

Akinyele said: "When I think about where agentic payments are today, it reminds me of the early days of cloud infrastructure. The potential was obvious, but the tooling and standards were still coming together."

x402 Protocol Integration Enables Three-Second Payment Confirmation

XRPL's x402 implementation can give an agent a confirmed payment result in roughly three to five seconds. That deterministic finality matters because software must know whether a transaction succeeded before purchasing another resource, retrying a request or continuing an automated task.

AI agents using the system can pay for cloud computing, market data, application programming interfaces and other digital resources as part of a task. Unlike a conventional online purchase, these payments occur automatically and continuously without a person entering card information or approving each transaction.

XRPL Provides Agent Tracking Tools and Enterprise Payment Partnerships

Developers can use XRPL's agent tracking tools, including SourceTags, transaction memos and WebSocket monitoring, to distinguish agent activity from human transactions, audit spending, and respond to unusual behavior. Those controls can be used if autonomous agents receive authority to manage subscriptions, purchase business services or move significant amounts of money.

Ripple is participating in Mastercard's AI payments initiative, which is exploring how autonomous systems can settle invoices, purchase computing resources and make other machine-to-machine payments while operating within preset permissions.

Akinyele said: "Crossing 1M agentic transactions on the XRPL is an exciting milestone, but I believe we're still in the early stages of what's possible. As AI agents become more capable, they'll need payment infrastructure that's just as seamless as the way they already exchange data. That's exactly the kind of infrastructure the XRP Ledger was built to provide."

FAQ

What did XRP Ledger achieve on July 21? XRP Ledger recorded over 1 million transactions attributed to AI agents, according to J. Ayo Akinyele, RippleX's head of engineering, in a statement on X on July 21. The milestone reflects growing use of autonomous software capable of initiating blockchain transactions and paying for digital services without manual approval.

How does Ripple's x402 protocol integration work for AI agents? Under the x402 protocol, an online service can send an AI agent a price and payment instructions. The agent can then submit an onchain payment, receive verification in roughly three to five seconds, and retry its request to access the service without opening a billing account or entering card details. XRPL's x402 implementation supports XRP and RLUSD payments.

What tracking tools does XRPL provide for AI agent transactions? XRPL provides agent tracking tools including SourceTags, transaction memos and WebSocket monitoring. Developers can use these tools to distinguish agent activity from human transactions, audit spending, and respond to unusual behavior when autonomous agents manage subscriptions or move funds.
