According to Kaiyuan city market supervisor statement on May 22, a video circulated online showing a street watermelon vendor applying an unidentified liquid to cut watermelons. Third-party lab testing confirmed the liquid is drinking water, with no detected food additives including sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, sodium saccharin, or cyclamate. Investigators found the vendor used drinking water to wipe watermelon surfaces before applying plastic wrap for freshness preservation.
