Abstract generation in progress

Shyam Sankar, the CTO of AI software firm Palantir PLTR -3.77% ▼ , said that the war in Iran could be remembered as the first major conflict where artificial intelligence played a central role. Speaking in an interview on Bloomberg TV, he explained that while the situation is still ongoing, people will likely look back and see this as a turning point in how wars are fought. In his view, AI has already helped make operations faster and more efficient as it becomes deeply integrated into modern warfare.

That shift is already visible in how the U.S. military is using AI tools on the ground. For example, Palantir’s Maven Smart System is being used as a digital command center that processes large amounts of data and helps speed up decision-making. The system has now been officially designated as a key military program, which means it is likely to receive steady funding going forward. Notably, Sankar explained that what is often called “targeting” is not just about firing weapons, but rather a complex and structured process that AI can help streamline, similar to how companies optimize supply chains.

Nevertheless, the growing role of AI in warfare is also raising concerns. In particular, there has been increased scrutiny around AI systems that could select and strike targets with minimal human involvement. This has already created tension, as Anthropic and the Department of War recently disagreed over how AI should be used in military settings. As a result, the Pentagon labeled Anthropic as a potential supply chain risk.
