If you feel bored during the daytime at the Hong Kong race meet, why not try an interesting Hong Kong travel experience: go to Goose Neck Bridge to “beat the little person”—for example, photos of project teams that couldn’t get their rights upheld, or the founder who “cut the leeks”~ Exorcise evil spirits, relieve stress, and get great shots~
In Hong Kong, besides shopping and eating at cha chaan tengs, want to experience the most authentic street-level folk culture? Strongly recommend going to Causeway Bay to experience the traditional “beat the little person” ritual once
Whether you’re hoping for a good omen or you simply think it’s fun and helps you decompress, this is a unique experience you absolutely shouldn’t miss
📍 Where to experience it?
Under the Goose Neck Bridge in Causeway Bay
This is the most famous and most authentic concentration spot for “beating the little person” in all of Hong Kong. Every day, a few ladies known as “po zai” set up stalls and do business here
⏰ When is the best time to go?
Daily hours: about 1 pm to 5 pm (the ladies usually open after lunch—go too early and you won’t find anyone)
🛠️ How do you play the “beat the little person” process?
The whole process is full of drama. The ladies recite spells while doing the steps—very contagious:
Report the “little person” identity: tell the lady who you want to beat. It can be a specific person, or a general reference such as a project party, an ex, a bad romance, etc. Don’t worry about privacy—the ladies have seen it all
Frenzied slapping with the shoe soles: the lady will take out a paper with a portrait on it, place it on a brick, and then smack it hard with your shoe sole (or a pair of shoes she brings)
Worship and resolve: after you finish, they will perform a rite for the White Tiger. They use pig fat to lubricate the tiger’s mouth to prevent biting, and they also burn clothing and offerings: burning paper money and gold-and-silver paper. Finally, they will also give you a “nobleman talisman” to help keep you safe
💡 Warm tips for tourists:
Prepare small change: the cost is usually between 50 and 100 Hong Kong dollars (depending on the package content). They only accept cash
Stay respectful: although it feels like a performance for tourists, it’s folk belief and faith for locals. You can take photos and record videos, but please keep smiling and don’t mock the ladies
Treat it as stress relief: listening to the ladies’ Cantonese spells that rise and fall in tone, and watching the paper effigy get slapped—psychologically, you really get a satisfying feeling of having your worries “beaten away.” It’s genuinely very stress-relieving
Summary:
For a few dozen Hong Kong dollars, you can buy a unique humanistic experience and an emotional release—this is definitely one of the most special memories from your trip to Hong Kong
