2026 Consensus Hong Kong Conference Policy Preview: The Current State of Cryptocurrency

Narrative

CoinDesk’s annual Consensus Hong Kong conference kicks off this Wednesday, with Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee delivering a speech.

Why It Matters

Hong Kong plays an interesting role at the crossroads of global East-West financial services. CoinDesk will delve into this role at the Consensus conference,

Breakdown and Analysis

On the first day of Consensus, we will hear speeches from Financial Secretary Paul Chan and Securities and Futures Commission Chief Executive Ashley Alder, and engage in discussions around asset tokenization, stablecoins, the evolving payment systems, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

Our speakers will include regulators and political figures from around the world. The discussion groups will explore how regulators and industry participants can work together in this field — a conversation we have annually at Consensus, but one that continues to evolve.

Privacy, artificial intelligence, decentralized finance, and trading behaviors will also be key topics during the conference.

This will be part of a busy week ahead: U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Gary Gensler will testify before the House Financial Services Committee and the Senate Banking Committee. While the hearings primarily focus on SEC oversight, the crypto sector and Gensler’s efforts to establish related regulations are expected to be central discussion points.

The White House will also convene another meeting between representatives of the cryptocurrency industry and banking sector. Details are not yet available.
