CME Group's encryption futures single-day Trading Volume hit a historical high, with the number of open contracts not closed as of 2025 rising 82% year-on-year.
On November 21, 2025, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange Group (CME Group) broke the single-day trading volume record for cryptocurrency futures and options, with a volume of 794,903 contracts, surpassing the previous record of 728,475 contracts set on August 22, 2025.
The recent surge in trading volume comes at a time of heightened volatility in the crypto assets market. Both institutional investors and retail traders have contributed to this record trading volume. Giovanni Vicioso, head of global crypto assets products at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, stated that demand for regulated risk management tools is increasing.
These contracts cover assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, and traders use these derivatives to hedge against price volatility risks or to speculate on future prices without having to hold the actual tokens. The average daily trading volume at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange so far this year is 270,900 contracts. This amounts to a notional value of $12 billion, a 132% increase compared to the same period in 2024; the open interest (measuring the number of outstanding contracts) has increased by 82% year-on-year, reaching 299,700 contracts, with a total notional value of $26.6 billion.
As of the fourth quarter of November, the average daily trading volume increased by 106% compared to the same period in 2024. The exchange processes 403,200 contracts daily, with a nominal value of $14.2 billion. During the same period, the open interest volume increased by 117%, reaching 493,700 contracts, with a nominal value of $35.4 billion.
The CME's micro futures and options products also set records. On November 21, the volume of micro futures and options contracts reached 676,088. Just the Bitcoin micro futures and options alone reached 210,347 contracts that day, setting a new daily trading volume record for the product. The exchange offers investment products for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and XRP. The CME will launch Solana and XRP futures options in October 2025. (CoinCentral)
