In October last year, Taiwanese quantitative firm UC Capital won a baseball auction for 4.39 million USD for Shohei Ohtani, who created a history of 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season. Since its spin-off from another company in 2021, UC Capital has achieved an annual average return of 51%. Recently, it has been actively recruiting summer interns with a high salary of 160,000 TWD per month. What is this quantitative trading company, hidden in the Taipei 101 building, doing? Liu Xinghan (Andre Liu), the sole owner of the company, said in an exclusive interview with Bloomberg that the company trades a large number of stocks, ETFs and derivatives using a variety of data-driven and algorithmic strategies. The pronunciation of UC is similar to its Chinese name “advantage”, which means superiority and superiority.

Liu Xinghan stated that the company has approximately 15 billion New Taiwan Dollars (497 million USD) in liquid assets, including cash, stocks, ETFs, and derivatives. However, it typically trades with three times leverage and has many highly active trading strategies.

According to the company’s internal documents, UC has achieved an 11% return so far this year through trading Taiwanese stocks, ETFs, and derivatives. In contrast, the Taiwan Weighted Index has fallen by 6.6% as of May 20.

Taiwan’s talent is flocking to semiconductors, with 160,000 high-paying internship positions being recruited.

Liu Xinghan stated that Taiwan’s most promising young professionals often tend to gravitate towards chip giants, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and MediaTek.

“The appeal of the tech industry is indeed too strong; in many traditional Taiwanese families, financial investment and trading are not seen as a legitimate profession.”

Ushi Capital has launched the Ushi AI Quantitative Rising Star Program, aiming to attract and nurture internationally competitive quantitative talent, with an internship salary of 160,000 TWD per month.

Ush Capital currently has 47 employees. Liu Xinghan intends to invest about 5% of the company’s profits in upgrading its technology infrastructure and artificial intelligence capabilities—but more importantly, there is a need to find more talent to maintain a competitive edge.
