This morning, I had the honor of speaking with Indian Prime Minister Modi. He is one of my best friends and a strong and respected leader of his country. We discussed many issues, including trade and ending the Russia-Ukraine war. He agreed to stop buying Russian oil and to purchase more from the United States, possibly including oil from Venezuela. This will help end the ongoing Ukraine war, where thousands are dying every week.
Out of friendship and respect for Prime Minister Modi, and at his request, we immediately reached a US-India trade agreement: the reciprocal tariffs imposed by the US on India will be reduced from 25% to 18%, and India will further reduce tariffs and non-tariff barriers on US goods to zero. The Prime Minister also promised to greatly increase the “Buy American” proportion and to purchase over $500 billion worth of US energy, technology, agricultural products, coal, and other items. Our excellent relationship with India will become even stronger.
Both Prime Minister Modi and I are capable of “getting things done,” which not many can do. Thank you all for your attention to this matter!
