Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has strongly criticized Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, describing it as “criminal aggression.” Ahead of the conflict’s fourth anniversary on February 24, 2026, Buterin called for sustained international support for Ukraine while advocating for long-term reforms in Russia inspired by blockchain governance principles.
Drawing from his Russian heritage and Canadian upbringing, Buterin emphasized the stark contrast between Ukraine’s institutional improvements over the past decade and Russia’s increasing repression, imperial ambitions, and military aggression. He stressed that Ukraine requires ongoing assistance to defend itself and minimize civilian suffering caused by attacks on residential areas, energy infrastructure, and other critical systems.
Continued Pressure on Russia
Buterin criticized narratives that downplay Russia’s responsibility, arguing that Moscow’s leadership currently lacks incentives to pursue peace. He suggested that only sustained military and economic pressure could compel meaningful negotiations, framing international support as crucial both for Ukraine’s defense and for broader European security.
Applying Blockchain Principles to Political Reform
Beyond immediate conflict resolution, Buterin proposed that long-term reform in Russia could benefit from decentralized governance models familiar in crypto ecosystems. He highlighted mechanisms such as quadratic voting, digital democracy, and decentralized decision-making to prevent authoritarian consolidation and allow citizens proportional influence over policy.
“The goal is to build a country that, when the objective is improving people’s lives, will be maximally strong, but when the goal is oppressing minorities or aggression against neighbors, will be maximally uncoordinated and weak,” he explained. Buterin noted that these concepts are not just theoretical; platforms like Pol.is, which enable large-scale public deliberation and consensus-building, could guide real-world governance transitions.
Vision for a “Beautiful Russia of the Future”
Buterin envisions a transformed Russia where internal governance prioritizes public welfare and economic prosperity over military aggression. He argued that achieving this would require new leadership and innovative ideas within the Russian political opposition. Drawing lessons from blockchain experimentation, he stressed that entrenched systems rarely progress without fresh strategies, inclusive participation, and iterative reforms.
He outlined a two-step approach: first, provide Ukraine with every possible form of support to weaken the Russian military and compel a ceasefire; second, focus on empowering moderate factions in Russia willing to adopt reform, peace, and decentralized governance principles after Putin’s departure.
A Radical, Technology-Inspired Approach
While blockchain governance has primarily been applied to digital networks, Buterin’s proposal suggests these models could inform national governance and conflict resolution. By linking crypto-inspired mechanisms with real-world political reform, he offers a novel perspective on how structural innovation may complement diplomacy and military pressure to achieve lasting peace.
