On March 2, according to Sky News, UK Defense Secretary John Healey recently stated that the UK is reassessing its domestic threat level following military strikes by the US and Israel on Iran, which triggered a regional chain reaction. Healey told Sky News that the security assessment is “absolutely ongoing,” and the UK government is closely monitoring the potential security risks arising from the escalation of the Middle East situation.
Since the weekend airstrikes, Iran has retaliated against Israeli and US military facilities in the Gulf region, with some Gulf countries also affected. Targets include major cities such as Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, and Dubai in the UAE. These areas are not only energy and trade hubs in the Middle East but also global centers for business and tourism.
Healey pointed out that when a regional power continues to expand military operations in the Middle East and launches more attacks through proxy forces, the UK must raise its alert level. Currently, the UK has elevated the protective status of its troops stationed in the Middle East to the highest level, and domestic security agencies have also increased vigilance to address potential threats.
He added that statements regarding terror threats within the UK will be issued by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood. Analysts believe that as the conflict between Iran, the US, and Israel continues to escalate, several European countries are strengthening security assessments to prevent regional conflicts from spilling over and impacting global security.
