UK adviser calls for regulation as AI could threaten humanity within 2 years

Will artificial intelligence control humans? Matt Clifford highlights the need for AI regulation within two years.

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to push the boundaries of what is possible, there is growing concern over whether these innovations will be more powerful than their creators.

Matt Clifford, chairman of the UK’s Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA), emphasized this in a recent interview with local news outlets.

AI needs to be regulated within 2 years

Clifford emphasized that artificial intelligence needs to be regulated as soon as possible to curb the risk of becoming “very powerful” within the next two years, because humans currently cannot control them.

“We have two years to put in place a framework that makes controlling and regulating these very large models much more possible than it is now,” he said.

Commenting on the near- and long-term risks that could arise from the use of AI tools, Clifford said information generated by AI could be used to create biological weapons or carry out cyberattacks.

Clifford isn’t the only technologist concerned about the risks associated with the growth of AI. In an open letter from the Center for AI Safety, 350 AI experts endorsed seeing AI as an existential threat in the same way that nuclear weapons and pandemics threaten human existence.

**Can artificial intelligence pose more threats to humans? **

Computer scientist and former Google employee Geoffrey Hinton also welcomed the idea of artificial intelligence taking power away from humans. Earlier this month, he mentioned in an interview that humans are building intelligence that can surpass humans and pose a threat to our existence.

Hinton, considered one of the godfathers of artificial intelligence, emphasized the efficiency and knowledge-sharing capabilities of digital intelligence compared to the limitations of biological intelligence. Hinton acknowledged the potential benefits of AI, while emphasizing the need to mitigate and prevent any negative consequences associated with it.
