Aboitiz Acquires CBK Hydroelectric Complex for P36.27 Billion, Strengthens Philippines' 789-MW Pumped-Storage Capacity

According to Vantage Point analysis, Aboitiz Power Corporation secured the Caliraya-Botocan-Kalayaan (CBK) hydroelectric complex through a P36.27 billion bid by the Thunder Consortium on February 9, 2026. The 789-MW facility is the Philippines' largest pumped-storage hydro installation, capable of absorbing excess grid electricity during low-demand periods and rapidly dispatching stored energy during peak demand or renewable supply fluctuations. Unlike conventional hydroelectric plants, CBK's pumped-storage capability enables real-time grid balancing, a critical function as solar and wind penetration increases across the Luzon network.
