Bank of Korea Reports Flat June Producer Price Index

The Bank of Korea reported that the producer price index remained flat month-over-month in June, according to data released on the 22nd. Year-over-year, the index rose 8.6%. The stabilization follows a slowing trend from April's 2.7% monthly increase to May's 1.0% gain, with offsetting movements across sectors driving the flat result.

Sector Price Movements Show Mixed Trends

Electricity, gas, water, and waste management prices increased 1.0% month-over-month, while industrial goods prices declined 0.3%. Within industrial goods, coal and petroleum product prices fell 5.3%. Services prices rose 0.2%, with financial and insurance services climbing 2.5%.

By special classification, food prices increased 0.4% and fresh food prices dropped 0.5%. Energy prices remained flat, while IT prices advanced 1.2%. Prices excluding food and energy showed flat movement.

Bank of Korea Official Cites Middle East War Impact

Lee Moon-hee, Team Leader of the Bank of Korea's Economic Statistics Department Price Statistics Team, stated that "secondary ripple effects from the Middle East war appear to be continuing" when asked whether consumer price inflation might slow given the producer price stabilization. Lee added that "this will act as an upward factor for consumer prices for the time being."

Lee explained that "looking at the trend of the index excluding energy in the special classification index, it is flat month-over-month, but continues to show an 8.2% increase year-over-year."

Domestic Supply Price Index Rises Across Production Stages

The domestic supply price index for June rose 0.7% month-over-month. Intermediate goods increased 0.5%, raw materials climbed 2.1%, and final goods advanced 0.5%, all contributing to the upward movement.

The domestic supply price index measures price fluctuations of goods and services supplied domestically, categorized by production stage — raw materials, intermediate goods, and final goods — to track the propagation process of price changes.
