On May 28, China's Foreign Ministry responded to a report from the UK-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) claiming that a China-U.S. conflict over Taiwan could escalate to the nuclear level. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that Taiwan is China's internal affair and that any resolution must reject separatism.

Mao emphasized that the U.S. should honor commitments made during bilateral leadership meetings and handle the Taiwan issue with utmost caution. The ministry also reiterated that maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait requires firm opposition to Taiwan independence.
