
According to TechCrunch’s report on April 28, citing the latest report from industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has accurately reported on Apple hardware plans multiple times, OpenAI is working with MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Luxshare Precision to develop a smart phone. Kuo said that specifications and parts suppliers are expected to be finalized by the end of 2026 or the first quarter of 2027, with mass production expected to begin in 2028.
Based on Kuo’s analyst report, the chip for OpenAI’s smart phone is jointly designed by OpenAI, MediaTek, and Qualcomm; Luxshare Precision serves as the joint design and manufacturing partner.
In the report, Kuo said that device specifications and parts suppliers are expected to be finalized by the end of 2026 or the first quarter of 2027, with mass production expected to begin in 2028.
According to Kuo’s report, the design concept for OpenAI’s smart phone is intended to replace traditional applications with AI agents by continuously understanding the user’s usage context to complete tasks. Kuo said the device will adopt a combination of small on-device models and cloud models to handle different types of requests.
Kuo also said that, by having its own hardware platform, OpenAI can avoid the current limitations imposed by Apple and Google on application development processes and system access permissions, and directly obtain more data on users’ usage habits; TechCrunch’s report also cited that ChatGPT’s weekly active users are currently approaching one billion.
Based on earlier public statements by OpenAI Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane, OpenAI expects to release its first hardware product in the second half of 2026. Some prior reports indicated that the first hardware could be a headphone-type product, while Kuo’s latest report points to a smart phone development plan.
