Gate News message, April 20 — Hong Kong gas utility Towngas has signed a partnership with Tencent to expand cloud systems and AI applications across its operations, building on collaboration that began in 2020.
The agreement encompasses a smart energy platform supporting over 100 integrated energy projects and a data analytics platform used by more than 70 affiliated city-gas companies. Towngas plans to migrate more core businesses to the cloud while developing digital platforms and AI tools. The partnership also leverages the Towngas Analytics Platform (TAP), built using Tencent’s big data suite, which now serves large-scale data applications across the utility’s network.
Tencent has been systematically expanding its presence in essential industries since 2017, including a prior collaboration with Shenergy Group, a state-owned Shanghai energy company, to develop a big-data energy operating system for resource allocation. Serving over 120 million customers, Towngas provides Tencent access to large-scale real-world operational environments, enabling refinement of its industrial AI and big-data products. The companies position this collaboration as a model for digital transformation in the energy sector, emphasizing improved operations, enhanced customer service, data security, and user privacy.
