According to testimony at a federal trial in Oakland, California, Elon Musk considered folding OpenAI into Tesla in late 2017 and early 2018, according to Shivon Zilis, a Neuralink executive and former OpenAI board member. Zilis testified that Musk explored offering Sam Altman a Tesla board seat as part of the effort, while also discussing the creation of an AI lab at Tesla where OpenAI co-founders would pursue artificial general intelligence.
