Pudgy Penguins launches Pudgy World: a "Penguin Club"-style game that becomes popular, with the PENGU token rising simultaneously

On March 10, it was announced that the well-known NFT project Pudgy Penguins officially launched its flagship browser game, Pudgy World, to the public. The most notable aspect of this game is that it hardly shows any obvious crypto elements, making it look more like a casual virtual world game aimed at mainstream players.

Pudgy World was first showcased at the Basel Art Fair in Switzerland at the end of 2023 and is now fully open for experience. The game is set in a virtual world called “The Berg,” which includes 12 uniquely styled towns. Players complete story missions to help a penguin named Pengu find a partner named Polly, while also participating in various mini-games and exploration activities. Hands-on experience shows that the game runs smoothly, with a simple interface, allowing even players unfamiliar with blockchain to quickly get started.

Many users believe this project reminds them of Disney’s early classic web game Club Penguin. Operated from 2005 to 2017, it had over 200 million registered users. Players could create penguin avatars and engage in social interactions and mini-games, making it a significant representative of mainstream virtual world games. Pudgy World clearly draws inspiration from this relaxed social and casual gameplay style.

Unlike many NFT games that prioritize building token economies first, the Pudgy Penguins team chose to develop a complete gaming experience before gradually integrating with crypto asset systems. This “game-first” design approach is seen as a clear adjustment to traditional blockchain gaming models.

The market responded positively to this attempt. After the announcement, the PENGU token rose about 9% on the same day. Meanwhile, the floor price of the Pudgy Penguins NFT series showed a slight increase in USD, reflecting market interest in the brand’s ecosystem expansion.

For a long time, the crypto gaming industry has faced user retention challenges. Many projects rely heavily on token incentives, attracting short-term arbitrage users. Once rewards decrease, players tend to leave quickly. Pudgy Penguins has taken a different approach: first expanding its audience through physical toys, meme culture, and brand content, then gradually launching game products.

Analysts believe that a single game release is not enough to prove this model’s complete success, but if Pudgy World can continue to attract ordinary players, it may become an important case in exploring mainstream entertainment experiences within the NFT gaming space. (CoinDesk)
