Silicon Valley Divided on Open vs. Closed AI as OpenAI, Anthropic Lobby U.S. Over China Threat

According to Sun Media and Hindustan Times reports published today, Silicon Valley is split on AI development strategy. OpenAI and Anthropic advocate strict controls on advanced AI models due to security risks, while Microsoft, Meta, Nvidia, IBM, and Palantir push for open-source AI to drive innovation and innovation transparency.

The debate has escalated to Washington, with OpenAI and Anthropic recently lobbying U.S. officials, warning of threats from Chinese open-source AI models. Five sources told Hindustan Times they raised concerns about China's AI advances. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trump's science adviser Michael Kratsios participated in discussions on protecting American AI technology. The Little Tech Association, representing nearly 200 Silicon Valley startups, has urged the Trump administration not to restrict Chinese open-source AI. U.S. officials are reviewing possible actions but have not decided on a full ban of Chinese AI models.
