South Korea Launches Distribution Network ESS Project, Invests 558.6 Billion Won Through 2030

According to South Korea's Ministry of Climate and Energy, the ministry signed agreements with 9 energy companies on July 10 to launch a distribution network energy storage system (ESS) project aimed at resolving renewable energy curtailment and grid connection issues in Honam and Jeju regions. The government plans to invest 558.6 billion won through 2030.

The selected companies, including LG Energy Solution, SK E&S, HD Hyundai Electric, and others, will deploy 128MW of ESS capacity across 32 distribution lines, enabling early grid connection of 182.4MW of solar power currently on standby. By 2030, the project targets deployment of approximately 700MW of ESS to facilitate additional 1GW of renewable energy integration.
