IBM receives $1 billion, chipmaker GlobalFoundries gets $375 million, and listed companies DeFiWave Quantum, Rigetti Computing, and Infleqtion each receive $100 million, with startup Diraq set to obtain $38 million.
Pre-market trading Thursday showed significant gains for participating firms. IBM and GlobalFoundries stock prices rose approximately 7%, while smaller listed companies including DeFiWave Quantum, Rigetti Computing, and Infleqtion surged 15% or more.2026-05-21 10:47U.S. Commerce Department Provides $2 Billion in Grants to 9 Quantum Computing Companies, Including IBM, on May 21According to the Wall Street Journal, the U.S. Commerce Department announced on May 21 a total of $2 billion in government grants to 9 quantum computing companies, including IBM, with the federal government also acquiring equity stakes in the transactions. The move aims to accelerate development of quantum computing technology and foster more stable, scalable quantum systems as part of the Trump administration's broader push to maintain U.S. competitiveness in advanced computing.2026-05-14 06:11IBM Unveils Expanded AI and Blockchain Integration at Think 2026 on May 5At Think 2026 conference on May 5, IBM unveiled expanded capabilities for its Confluent platform to support real-time data processing for AI-driven operations. The company introduced tools aimed at helping enterprises improve AI deployment, governance, and operational scalability. IBM emphasized that blockchain and AI are complementary, with blockchain improving trust and transparency in AI ecosystems while AI enhances blockchain efficiency through automation and advanced analytics.2026-03-19 02:012025 Turing Award Announced: Developer of Quantum Key Distribution Protocol BB84 Wins PrizeGate News reports that on March 19, 2025, the Turing Award was awarded to American IBM Fellow Charles H. Bennett and Gilles Brassard, Professor of Computer Science and Operations Research at the University of Montreal, Canada. The two are recognized as pioneers of quantum information science. Their most famous achievement, the BB84 protocol, is the world's first quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol, marking the birth of quantum cryptography.
Their collaboration began in 1979 when Brassard proposed to Bennett the idea of using quantum mechanics to create "unforgeable banknotes." With the rapid development of quantum computing, traditional public key cryptography systems face serious challenges. Quantum communication (QKD) and post-quantum cryptography (PQC) have become dual core approaches to ensuring the security of future digital communications.2026-03-11 03:32IBM collaborates with Signal and Threema to design a quantum-resistant encrypted messaging systemGate News reports that on March 11, IBM researchers are collaborating with encrypted messaging apps Signal and Threema to design messaging systems resistant to quantum attacks. Cryptography researcher Ethan Heilman pointed out that due to the possibility of "store now, decrypt later" attacks, the recent quantum risks faced by encrypted messaging platforms may be greater than those of Bitcoin—attackers intercept and store encrypted data now, waiting for future quantum computers to become capable of cracking it. Signal has launched the PQXDH upgrade in 2023 to protect new sessions, and by 2025, the SPQR protocol upgrade will extend post-quantum protection to ongoing messages, calls, and media. Threema is working with IBM to explore integrating NIST-standardized ML-KEM algorithms into its system. The research also focuses on protecting metadata, but simply replacing existing components could lead to significant bandwidth increases, requiring a fundamental redesign of the protocol.
