The U.S. government has taken a decisive stance against Anthropic, a leading artificial intelligence company in the country. On March 2nd, the Department of the Treasury and the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) announced they will completely cease using Anthropic’s products, including the Claude AI platform. This decision was made following directives from President Donald Trump, requiring federal agencies to stop collaborating with the company.
The Pentagon also indicated that Anthropic might be classified as a “supply chain risk,” a designation typically applied to foreign adversarial suppliers. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that all of Anthropic’s tools will be phased out, while FHFA Director William Pulte stated that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will also stop using the technology. The Department of Defense has a six-month transition period. The decision is believed to stem from disagreements over control and oversight mechanisms for the technology, although specific details have not been disclosed.
