According to China’s Defense Ministry spokesman Rear Admiral Jiang Bin, Japan’s defense minister and Philippines defense secretary issued a joint statement on May 9 opposing any unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the East China Sea and South China Sea through force or coercion. The two nations expressed serious concern over what they characterized as China’s “dangerous coercion” in their respective regions and pledged to strengthen defense cooperation in equipment technology and information sharing.
