User Sues ByteDance's Douyin-Backed AI 'Doubao' for $600 Ticket Refund Scam; Lawyer Says AI Promise Has No Legal Force

According to Guru Club, a user was misled by the AI assistant Doubao on May 20 regarding a flight refund from Shijiazhuang to Chongqing. Doubao claimed a 5% service fee would be charged, but the user was actually deducted 40%, resulting in a 600 yuan ($83) loss. After Doubao promised to recover the fee and provide full compensation by May 6, the AI later claimed it could not transfer funds. The user filed a lawsuit against Doubao's operator, Beijing Chungtian Zhiyun Technology Co., on May 12. Lawyer Deng Yile from Beijing Xingquan Law Firm stated that AI-generated compensation promises lack legal validity, as AI lacks civil subject status and cannot independently express intent.
